Nina’s Beatnik Requiem
For the purpose of this project I was inspired by the 1950s Beatnik dresses with a hint of punk. A major influence on my designs is the designer Vivienne Westwood whose designs I adore. I experimented with various materials before narrowing to silk netting and beads. To establish an outline for my design I sketched various outlines encompassing various patterns and curves. I researched various internet sites and fashion magazines as well as drew inspirations from objects and shapes that are around me. I wanted to create something that would have a wow effect yet would be subtle, a mix of 1950s aura, touches of punk rebelliousness and a degree of modernity.
The fabric mostly comprises of silk. The design process encompasses measurement of the model and hand sewing the seam. The beads are stitched onto the fabrics first in the required pattern. The dress require just one seem on the back. If a full size dress for a 6 feet tall model is to be conceived the back seam would start 30 cm from the bottom and would be 100 cm long with the rest covered by proportionally placed buttons. Finally the arms and back cloak is sewn into the dress. The look is finished off with a hairpiece that also serves as a hairband.
